The Puuc Route
The Puuc Route is a trail that runs through a hilly portion of Yucatan state, approximately 40kms south of Merida. The trail takes you past, and sometime through, a series of related Maya archaeological sites. These sites are generally understood to include: Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, and Labná. Some also will include the site of Oshkintok in this list, too.
Puuc is the Yucatecan Maya word for hill or mountain and lends its name to a particular style of architecture that developed in the cities that arose in this area. Elements of this style include smooth vertical walls, intricate stone mosaics, and decorative columns, friezes, and masks.
